Basket from the West Street bakery, stamped ‘HOVIS’, c1950

Description

Baker’s delivery basket, sturdily-made from willow and ratan cane, two wooden slats or ‘clogs’ fixed to the undersideand the brand name ‘HOVIS’ stencilled both ends. From the West Street bakery, well-used and smelling of baking!
The basket is estimated to date from c1950. It was found, well-used, in 1987 when the bakery changed hands. A postcard view in West Street taken c1905 shows the bakery had a HOVIS sign above the window.
